One finished, and the darks appear in the Triptych

Finished the two small paintings, they will stay black and white.
Also painted the darks in the small triptych. I need to add more dark into the background and then I'll bring in the lights. Still on the fence on whether to keep the small triptych black and white or add colour..

The Triptych, lineart done

Did the lineart of the paintings.
Today I hope to get at least the shading done and get to work more on the big triptych.

Promised more sketches, so here you go.

Some more sketches as preparation to making the Triptych. As promised. :)

And also some sketches for a quick painting I will be doing next to the triptych. Basically to get a good feel for the brush I'll first do the small painting and then get into the triptych.

Triptych sketch, closed.

Finally, gesso is dry. Had to make some sketches to work out how the heads and bodies of the moon folk would work. This is a quick update of the sketch on the front of the triptych.I will soon begin doing the lineart and underpainting.
Later I will do an update with the sketches and studies for the front.

The process continues, the arrival of the microdrill.

I've been working on my triptych, yet forgot to upload the pictures.
The gessooing went well, the triptych works well yet of course, in this version the painted layers would be pressed against each other.

The version for which I needed the drill will have the frames separating the painted surface from each other. The hinges will be screwed into the frames, at four points. I also made a re-design so that the inside image will be one complete painting instead of having the frames split it into three parts by the framing.

Did some designing, redesigning, paintstakingly trying to figure out how to make the triptych work, physically. Ordered a microdrill to make holes for the screws so that the screws wouldn't break apart the frames. And today it arrived, it is a nice small thing.
I begin to realize I am sort of delving into new territory here since I cannot find a lot of tutorials on the stuff I want to do. Which means that it is either impossible or few have done it before.

Now back to work, got to do a little more designing of the last character and then sketch the linework on the actual panels of the small triptych. Which will be done in acrylics, which will hopefully 'stick' less. With oilpaint, it will take ages for the painted surface to be dry enough to be pressed together without damaging. Acrylics dry faster so hopefully will be able to be presentable sooner.

A triptych, continued..

Meanwhile, while doing sketches, digitally and traditionally I have been working on how to turn my designs of the triptych into a real triptych.
MDF at the sides is very fragile so you cannot just put screws in it.

My first design is actually using canvas, as you see, the back has a little bit of canvas showing through, that piece of canvas is actually what is holding the panels together.

The second design, now just painted up, edited into Krita, the free digital painting program, will actually have hinges screwed into the frames instead of the mdf and might actually have canvas in the frames.

What I did read up on panels is that in 'ye olde days' the panels were actually made with frames already attached when they intended it to be a finished piece. This was a very interesting and inspiring detail. One I might work with more in the future.

Thus the second will be full sized and the first might be getting a big version if it works out well.
And I'll might be making more of these triptych like things. It adds a lot to work itself. It makes it more a piece instead of just a panel with an image on it.
This might actually be one of the reasons why one would want to own a painting physically instead of a digital version of print. Like, another reason, instead of just how the oil works visually with the light through the layers and mixes instead of flat/pointilistic composed images on screen/print and the visual of seeing the actual paintstrokes in stereo.
