Vellum portrait of a Electromancer

Been some time since I posted last.
Been scanning my sketchbook since I recently filled it up.

I did prepare some sketches for painting though, one new sketch and another of which the design is old and will be the basis for a new idea on painting in layers. Sort of a try out.
When I finish scanning I'll probably put another page or two from my sketchbook online.

This must be the 13th blogpost right? A glimpse inside my sketchbook.

It has been a slow last few days sadly.
A lot more was planned.

On a more positive, I found an A3 printer/scanner.
This is a great asset, allows me to scan bigger paintings,
print on a larger format but most importantly.

It allows me to scan my sketchbooks two pages at a time.
Which halves the time it takes to scan a filled out sketchbook,
and scanning a sketchbook takes an awful lot of time.

But sketches being so valuable to me, you cannot put all eggs in one basket.

This is actually where the magic happens,
so I'll give you a glimpse inside one.

Quite recent, you probably recognise some paintings and you will probably notice in the future that some more are based on these two pages.

So enjoy.

Project Moonowlith, first oil layer

And it isn't melting or destroying the vellum. Great.

Oddly my old oil paint inside my terpetine container I clean my brushes with and often use the leftovers for the sketching changed into a gooey substance.

Whoever knows what infernal chemical process has my leftover paint changed into inedible goo.
Do please tell me. Might try to paint with it..

Trying out Vellum, the sketch fase.

Finally trying out the vellum I purchased a few weeks ago. First test was sketching, I tried it with marker and pencil. Marker stayed remarkably well on and didn't bleed through the vellum.

The pencil sketch was done as preperation for the oil-sketch. I will soon test out how it hold up with the violence of oils and oilpaint and the horrors of terpetine and rectified terpetine.
Will keep you, my mysterious followers, posted. Yet the oilpaint version will be photographed with my crappy note 3 camera instead of the scanner.
Though I must say, for a smart phone camera, it did a way better job then my scanner on the pencil sketch.

Finally finished the grayscale for the two possible fronts of the Triptych.

Moonowlithic Triptych, grayscale

Finished the grayscale painting.

Though something still irks me,
might do a few edits tomorrow..

Reworked Triptych, sketch phase

Reworked the triptych a little after careful consideration. Now to painting the lines for the final design and then on to values with grayscale.

I have also been very busy with designing the ships they use. Since they had to follow the basic logistics of the lore I am writing around them.

For anyone watching, if you find the older ships more pleasing, do feel free to comment.
I might make another version with the old designs then.

For now, work to do.

And finished the lineart for it.

Now the values in grayscale!

Anatomical study of a lunar skull

As you create beings that do not have a real counterpart, you do need to study what their anatomy would be like so you know how light would hit the creature, how their jaw behaves etc..

Tomorrow I'll render this in grayscale, might work on some more tomorrow.. We'll see.

EDIT: I actually got pulled into the painting again and actually finished this piece in one session.

The painting of lines

Last week at Friday I was going on tour with the moped club of a friend of mine.
I did finish painting the base lines last week yet scanning work does take longer then painting the sketch. Thus I sadly couldn't finish it on time. Today I scanned the last few sketches.

So here they are.

Vellum and thumbnails

And it did arrive!

As I was just finishing my thumbnails of the upcoming paintings.

Every time making thumbnails I realize how important it is to do. It really forces you to think about lighting and composition.
If it isn't as clear on a small piece, it will look off on a large piece.

Now to go try it out. Though A4 is a tad bit tiny for the electromancer, I will give it a go.

Triptychs and Trygometric Cycles

Triptych of an moonowl capture and fusion into a moonowlith.

The Moonowlithic Triptych and Trygometric Cycle of a Moonowlith,
two sets of sketches of work I made yesterday and finished scanning today.
Most of the day was spend scanning, at first the Jesus painting and sketches/paint sketches done for a client I now posted on facebook as well as these sketches.

I also ordered some Vellum. I've seen this artist "Happy D" use it with oil paint and was pleasantly surprised that it was a possibility. Thus I searched and ordered it. Will probably try both oils and acrylics on it and see how that works out.

One of the handicaps a traditional artist always has is that the first sketch underneath and layers underneath will be lost under the painting.
These days they are doing their best to use x-ray and other ways of scanning to look through layers of paint of Rembrandt and other famous artists to see what lies underneath.

With Vellum I might be able to make multiple paintings off of a sketch.

I hope it will arrive tomorrow and I will be able to test it.

Finished and staying grayscale

There we go, four 'finished' pieces. As I like to call them. There is always loads more time to spend on a piece but for now I will keep these at this level of progress. I really feel the limit of working as small as they are. They are painted on the back of a fourth of a small pizza box. Thus getting detail in is beginning to get very tricky as well as the only contrast you have is value since there isn't any colour in it. It is all a gradient between black and white. I have seen tiny brushes in which I could up the detail and realism in these pieces still but for now I rather spend time producing more concepts.

Also the full progress can be posted but for now I see no value to it unless someone would like me to post it.

So do feel free to comment and if you like it thus far, you may always, but do not have to, follow me pressing the follow button. :)

As for now, I am going to lay down the groundworks for a triangular work.
Perhaps I will post more today, but at least tomorrow I will post more work. Until then.

One or the Other

Day goes slow but purposeful even tho a headache torments the brain.
Wonder, would these beings have headaches, since their heads are so big, and especially with such an electrical tesla collar so close to their minds?

Either way, second one came out as more realistic, the first has a bit more flow though the stance is a little more static. Wonder which one I like best..

A slow day and the start of another

Yesterday was a very slow day.
Don't get me wrong, a lot had to happen and has been done yesterday. Sadly nothing art related.
So this morning I finished the font of the third picture and did some line painting.
Will be updated soon.
